2012 Programme

I have now set the programme, based on feedback from members. I have cut down on the number of seminars but organised them so that there is still something every month.

  1. The Self Defence Seminar will now also include weapons defence (knives, sticks, bottles, chains etc) for regulars/repeat members taken from the brown stripe syllabus. There will still be a theory element to it which will be aimed to beginners/new members, but it will be shorter in length.
  2. The stick and knife seminar have been combined to a Weapons Seminar, which will be divided half between the two, with elements of the brown stripe and black belt syllabus.
  3. The Grappling Seminar will be done on a Thursday in Studio 1. Its not ideal as we won’t have access to the padded room at Cobra, but the feedback was that weekends weren’t popular, so we shall have to make do with the blue matts. This will draw in elements of the blue stripe/brown/black syllabus as before.
  4. The special classes on the 3rd Anniversary and Closing Session will continue to give you a taster of some of the advanced elements of Bushin such as trapping, ki work, pressure points, dirty boxing etc.

Some of the dates may move around depending on bookings and my personal commitments. Upcoming events over the next 3 months are always shown at the bottom of the webpage. The provisional schedule will look like this. If you ever need to confirm dates when booking holidays etc., please just ask….

  • Jan 5 – First class back
  • Feb 9 – Self Defence Seminar
  • Mar 4 – Grading
  • Apr 5 – Grappling Seminar
  • May 3 – Sparring Seminar
  • June 10 – Grading
  • July 5 – Weapons Seminar
  • Sept 2 – Grading
  • Sept 13 – Self Defence Seminar
  • Oct 18 – 3rd Anniversary (Special Class)
  • Dec 2 – Grading

I hope you will be pleased with the programme. We can always look to change it at a later stage if we get interest to do something differently. I look forward to another enjoyable year. Please do your best to attend the seminar…I’m sure you will get a lot out of them!

Defend Yourself!

Worried about personal safety? Can you defend yourself? On Thursday 6th October, we shall be hosting our third Self Defence Seminar.

The facts are compelling. According to the British Crime Survey, there were around 2.2 million incidents of violent crime reported last year, although this is probably much higher as only around a third is actually reported. 20% of all crime in the UK is attributable to violent crime, with Westminster Borough in London having the highest percentile (270 per 1,000 persons). Half of these involve an injury to the victim and 20% with a weapon. In 2010 a teenager was stabbed and killed in a gang attack at Victoria station, two minutes from our centre. The risk of becoming a victim of a crime is about 1 in 4 people.

The general public perceives their area to be safer than it actually is and that crime is on the rise, especially knife and gun crime. A lot of people are concerned about personal safety but don’t do anything about it. The facts show how important personal safety is. This is not being able to bring your attacker down with a flick of the wrist like Bruce Lee, but having the awareness and preparation to know what to do when put into a situation of potential violence. Would you fight or take flight?

The seminar will be from 7.30-9pm on Thursday 6th October in Studio 1 at the Queen Mother Sports Centre in Victoria. The cost will be £15 (£10 for repeating members). The seminar will cover the theory and practical application of personal safety, awareness and basic self defence techniques. No need to book, just wear your normal clothes and turn up! Look forward to seeing you there.

Rolling in a Corridor

Great Bushin session last night.

Corridor sparring using distance work, fighting while moving forwards and backwards. All in 2d when in a tight space so you don’t have the luxury of lateral movement like yoke. Really challenging to do.

Then did some angle of attack tag sparring for the beginners and a bit of groundwork for the rest, working on submissions…americana, chokes, guillotines.

Finally seiho – accupressure massage on the back to work out the kinks.

Lots of smiles all round…

Take it the Mat: G&G Seminar #3

Take it the Mat: G&G Seminar #3 – Sunday 8th 2pm

Don’t forget the grappling and groundwork seminar next Sunday 8th May. It will be at 2pm in the Cobra Gym downstairs, to make use of the mats. This is the third instalment and we shall focus more on juho waza (soft techniques or grappling)…learning the basic control methods particularly with head clinch work and defence against body and leg tackles. We shall use the opportunity to get in some good stand-up grappling sparring, with throws and takedowns to practise on bridging the gap between stand-up and groundwork. The focus, as always, will be on the basics of grappling and groundwork from a self defence standpoint, not traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) rolling. The seminar will draw in elements of BJJ, Japanese Jujutsu, Thai and Filipino boxing put into a context of self defence. Hard work, but great fun so don’t miss it!

Stick it to ‘em #2

Stick Seminar: This Thursday – 2nd December at 7.30pm (studio 1 downstairs)

The nyoi-bo (literally “control stick”) is an ideal weapon of self defence and an integral part of the Bushin syllabus. Applied in the right fashion it can be a devastating way to incapacitate an attacker, especially against those armed with a weapon. The seminar shall focus on basic attack and defence techniques, mainly drawing on elements of Kali and Shorinji Kempo. After learning the basics, angles of attack and simple drills we shall be sparring it all in as usual to make sure it works!

Please bring along a stick and eye goggles if you have them. If not, don’t worry as I should have some supplies. Please join us!
